Before You Agree to Replace Your HVAC System

Understand the problem. Know your options. Make an informed decision.

I've visited many homeowners for a second opinion after they were told they needed a new heating or cooling system. Sometimes replacement made sense. Other times, a repair was available. What concerned me was how often the homeowner hadn't been offered a repair—or received a clear explanation of what had been tested and why replacement was recommended.

A recommendation to replace your system may be sound. But you deserve to understand how that recommendation was reached, what alternatives were considered, and what each option means for your home and your budget.

Start with the diagnosis

Before approving a major expense, ask the person evaluating your equipment:

  • What has failed? Ask for a plain-language explanation of the problem.
  • How did you confirm it? Ask what testing or observations support the diagnosis and whether the findings can be included in writing.
  • Can it be repaired safely? If a repair is possible, ask for its cost and limitations. If it isn't, ask why.
  • Why do you recommend replacement? Ask how the equipment's condition, repair history, parts availability, and the proposed repair affect that recommendation.
  • What does each option include? Ask for written repair and replacement proposals, including their warranty terms and any exclusions.

You don't need to become an HVAC technician to ask these questions. You need an explanation you can understand well enough to make a decision.

A repair deserves an honest evaluation

A repair can address an immediate problem, but it does not make the rest of the equipment new. Ask what the repair is expected to resolve and whether other known issues remain.

Replacement may be the better choice when the condition of the equipment, safety concerns, repeated breakdowns, or the cost and availability of repairs support it. The important thing is that the recommendation follows an evaluation of your system and your circumstances.

If you're unsure about the explanation or the proposed work, a second opinion can help you understand your options before committing.

How I approach the decision at Renegade

I own an HVAC business, and I pay my technicians a finder's fee when they sell a new system. I also encourage them to offer a more affordable repair when it makes sense. You deserve to understand the available options, including the reasons for recommending one over another.

We also offer a repair credit toward a later system replacement. The repair addresses the immediate problem; the credit gives you an option if you choose to replace that same system within the following year.

Our repair-to-replacement credit

All repairs qualify for the credit. Your repair charge determines your replacement credit:

  • $200 repair $200 credit
  • $350 repair $350 credit
  • $500 repair $500 credit
  • Any repair over $500 $500 credit

The credit applies toward replacement of the same system through Renegade Heating & Cooling. It expires one year from the actual repair date, when the repair warranty expires.
